Police are asking people to be vigilant following recent case of a suspected car sale scam in Stowmarket.
It took place on Sunday 11 August at some point at about 830pm. The male victim had placed an online advert for his vehicle for sale.
At about 830pm three men turned up at to view the van, one claiming to be a mechanic. The victim let them have a short test drive. On return they requested the victim lift the bonnet which found there was oil on the engine and oil in the coolant.
They wanted the van at a significantly reduced price claiming a cylinder block had cracked – the victim refused and the group left. The AA confirmed that oil had been put into the coolant and thrown over the engine, as well as disconnecting a sensor. It is thought the group distracted the victim and tampered with the engine causing serious defects.
Anyone who knows who was responsible or has also experienced a similar incident should contact Suffolk police, quoting 37/45949/24
Potential sellers of vehicles are asked to be mindful of who they invite to view their vehicles and monitor their actions at all times. They are also advised to retain all vehicle documentation such as log books/V5s prior to the transaction being completed.
