Safe Rider Workshops

We offer various workshops for drivers and riders to help reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on our roads.

Safe Rider Scheme

Safe Rider is a joint initiative between Suffolk and Norfolk Constabularies which aims to reduce motorcycle casualties.

Our workshops are run over one day and are aimed at all fully qualified riders from post test novices to experienced riders who want to improve their skills to become better and safer riders. The sessions are relaxed and informal:

  • The underlying message of our workshops is that education is the key, not enforcement.
  • In a conflict free environment, riders will be introduced to the police roadcraft system - the corner stone of police riding.
  • The workshop provides individuals with professional advice and confirms their strengths and identifies their weaknesses as a rider.
  • During the road session you will receive a demonstration ride by a police rider and there will be an opportunity to have your riding assessed with written feedback.

The one-day workshop is aimed at riders living in Suffolk and is run with the support of:

Copdock Classic Motorcycle Club
Lings
Orwells Motorcycles
Reiten Motorad
Suffolk Roadsafe
Suffolk Riders
Suffolk Advanced Motorcyclists

Workshop information

Suffolk Police Safe Rider workshops are run at either Police Headquarters, Martlesham Heath. The workshops cost £50 and is full day. We had some success last year with a weekday session so this year the workshops are run across four Fridays and fours Saturdays during 2023.

Participants will receive a pre read on the system of road craft, with particular attention given to positioning and cornering. This will be discussed in the morning of your session followed by an escorted ride out session with a class one police motorcyclist.

A maximum 3:1 ratio ensures an accurate and personalised assessment of your riding performance, which will be explained to you at the end of the session.

Once a date has been arranged you will receive information prior to attendance.

Drivewise

DriveWise is a road safety presentation aimed at young drivers in Suffolk.  The aim of the presentation, which includes videos, slides and interactive voting, is to make people aware of the consequences of dangerous driving.

1 in 3 of all people killed on Suffolk roads in 2015 were aged between 16 and 24. We hope the presentations may go some way to help reduce the casualties within this higher-risk driving group.

Suffolk police would like to hold DriveWise sessions for young people across Suffolk and deliver this important message to as many people as possible.  The sessions have been run in schools throughout the county – with a lot of positive feedback from those involved.

If your school or organisation is interested please get in touch with your local SNT here.

Please include your name and contact details and which organisation you represent.

Please note we will only be able to hold a session if we have sufficient interest.

Be Blue Light Aware

Blue Light Aware is a short video, produced on behalf of the emergency services. Their crews rely on the help of other road users when they're on a 'blue light' journey.

By watching Blue Light Aware, you will better understand their needs, you will be reducing the risks you face, you will be contributing to a safer road environment and you might also be helping to save a life.

Dear Kevin

I wanted to express my gratitude to you and your team after attending the recent Safe Rider course. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and found it extremely useful and the ride with Steve was a revelation and great fun, making progress safely. It has certainly spurred me on to take the training further and I hope to take my IAM test next year through the Suffolk Advanced Motocycling club.

Please pass on my thanks to Steve Griggs

Kind regards

Dear Vince,

Your recent email to Andrew Masterson has been brought to my attention and I wanted to write to you  personally and thank you for your complimentary remarks about the Saferider Workshops.

Suffolk Constabulary continually strives to deliver the best possible service and it is both reassuring and gratifying to receive such supportive comments.

GARETH WILSON – CHIEF CONSTABLE

Morning Kevin,

Just a quick line to say how much I enjoyed the Saferider Course on Friday/Saturday, I found it informative and I learned that my riding is a bit “Old School” so I will be practicing the "new to me" techniques that you and your team taught as well as what I learned from watching others ride, especially Simon Myall who took me out for the assessment ride.

Simon does make progress look regal like the swan on the pond where all the activity is hidden, I on the other hand am still at the Ugly Duckling stage but I am sure I will keep improving.

Thanks again to you, Simon and all the team who gave all of us a warm welcome, took the time to impart their knowledge to us, and shared our common interest in Motorbikes

Best regards

Kevin White
