I joined the detective entry scheme in November 2017, and I am now currently an Acting Detective Sergeant in CID .
I had a very successful career in Insurance dealing with multiple sectors such as, motor, employers’ liability, and public liability, dealing with reinsurance and claims worth millions of pounds. I had been a successful manager of various teams dealing with all the problems that came with the role of being a manager. I was happy in my role and always looking to improve myself but always feeling like I was never doing something that meant anything.
Suffolk Police were advertising for a new scheme that was looking at introducing new entrants into the role of a detective, I had thought that I was probably too old to join the police through the usual route, but felt like the skills I had could be used in the police and this opened a door I thought was shut. Luckily for me I was successful in the application and have never looked back!
I have had some fantastic jobs to deal with which range from burglaries, robberies, blackmail and stabbings to a large-scale violent disorder which resulted in obtaining multiple European arrest warrants after the suspects fled the country.
I have had to work with multiple other agencies to ensure that offenders have been prosecuted and justice obtained for victims.
Being a detective is fantastic, it’s hard work, very demanding and very challenging but it is also rewarding and so varied.
One day you could be dealing with a burglary the next day at court getting a warrant and then on to a suspicious sudden death.
The role of the detective encompasses so many different aspects of the police, I have had the opportunity to be a detective in the fast-paced department such CID but also the Fraud Department which opened a whole other avenue of investigations and enquiries that are just as challenging.
I’m proud to be a detective in Suffolk police it has given me the opportunity to feel like I am making a difference with what I do on a day to day basis, keeping Suffolk safe, putting victims first and ensuring we deliver high quality investigations
