A man from Ipswich who was jailed for seven years in March last year for drugs offences has been ordered to pay back more than £51,000 at a proceedings of crime hearing.
Alper Basoglu, 26, formerly of St George’s Street, Ipswich, was given a seven-year custodial sentence at Ipswich Crown Court after pleading guilty to seven counts of drug related offences, including being involved in the supply of cocaine and cannabis, possession of cannabis with intent to supply, possession of cocaine and Class C drug clonazepam, attempting to import herbal cannabis and possession of criminal property.
Basoglu had been arrested in September 2022 in relation to drug offences.
On Monday 13 January Basoglu was ordered to pay a £51,631.79 confiscation order at a Proceedings of Crime Act (POCA) hearing at Ipswich Crown Court. This was the entirety of his assets, comprising of cash seized by police totalling £14,310 and cryptocurrency valued at £37,321.
He was ordered to repay the money he had made from his crimes in satisfaction of the order. Basoglu was ordered to pay this sum within three months or face a default sentence of 12 months imprisonment should the order not be paid. He would still then be required to pay the full amount.
Andy Gould, a Financial Investigator from the Eastern Region Special Operations Unit said: “The message here is simple. If you are profiting from crime, we will look to arrest and charge you, but this will not be the end.
“We will continue to use the POCA’s asset recovery powers to work tirelessly to hit those who engage in the supply of drugs and strip them of the of the wealth they have derived from their illicit activities.”
“While this order is of a considerable sum, the total benefit of Basoglu’s illicit earnings was calculated at being more than £200,000, and in such cases confiscation orders may be revisited in the future and uplifted if the subject, in this case Alper Basoglu, is found to have newly acquired asset wealth.”
