‘We Don’t Buy Crime’ campaign

Suffolk Constabulary is launching a new ‘We Don’t Buy Crime’ initiative with the aim of preventing acquisitive crime; putting offenders out of business.

Crimes where the offender profits include burglary, theft, vehicle crime and robbery.

In targeted areas across West Suffolk the project will enable Suffolk Police to:

• Visit victims of burglary and vehicle crime and issue Smartwater forensic property marking kit to burglary victims.
• Provide vehicle marking kits to victims of vehicle crime and UV Markers to the neighbours of victims to help them protect their property.
• Hold vehicle marking engagement days.
• Erect Smartwater signs in key locations, warning criminals that the area had taken crime prevention measures.

A £30,000 fund for the project received by West Suffolk Council has enabled the purchase of 1500 Smartwater home kits, 2500 UV markers, 500 vehicle marking kits, and 150 RFID (Radio Frequency Identification Device) pedal cycle identification kits.

The funding has been made possible by Safer Streets 5, which is a collaboration between the Home Office and Suffolk’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Tim Passmore, who said: “I am pleased to see the Safer Streets 5 funding making an impact in the west of the county.

“This funding will support victims of burglary and vehicle crime, and prevent others from become victims of these appalling crimes.

“We are fortunate to live in one of the safest counties in the country and anything we can do to maintain this status is welcome.”

Inspector Timothy Scott said: “Keeping Suffolk safe is at the heart of our work and we understand the impact these types of offences can have, on individuals, communities and businesses. Taken together, the ‘We Don’t buy Crime’ measures are designed to both deter criminal activity and reduce harm across our county. “
