A man from Lowestoft has been jailed for 26 weeks for breach of a sexual harm prevention order.
Joe McCallum, aged 34 and from Westwood Avenue in Lowestoft, was jailed at Ipswich Crown Court (20 January 2024) after he pleaded guilty to breach of SHPO and fail to comply with notification requirements.
On 19 Jan 2024, officers from the Suffolk Public Protection Unit (PPU) attended McCallum’s address and located digital devices, established there was access to social media and also found a bank card which had not been registered with police as per his SHPO and the sex offender notification requirements.
He was arrested and subsequently charged with four breaches of his SHPO and failing to comply with section 80 of the Sexual Offences Act.
At court he was sentenced to 26 weeks imprisonment and had his licence revoked. McCallum was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £154.
PPU Supervisor DS Kate Bond said: “McCallum is a repeat offender and has shown a flagrant disregard for his SHPO that, amongst other things, prevents him from accessing the internet and having any contact with any female under 18 years of age. Internet crimes are far from victimless and every image depicts the very real abuse a young child has suffered.”
A sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) is a court order that can be requested by the police, or court when there is a specific concern about an individual. This court order will be requested to prevent a person from engaging in a particular activity and for positive obligations, such as regular polygraph testing.
