Lowestoft - Man arrested and charged following robbery

A 32-year-old man has been arrested and charged following a robbery in Lowestoft.

Police were called to the Shell Garage on the High Street at approximately 7:40pm on Tuesday, 10 May, following reports of a robbery in progress.

A man aged in his 50s was returning to his Nissan Duke car after paying for fuel when an unknown man ran onto the forecourt, kicked the victim from behind causing him to fall to the ground and then threatened him with a claw hammer.

The suspect made several unsuccessful attempts to start the vehicle before running off with the victim’s keys.

He was pursued by officers on foot and arrested on suspicion of robbery a few minutes later at the Britten Shopping Centre. He was then taken to Great Yarmouth Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

Jerry Lawson, of no fixed abode, was subsequently charged with robbery and possession of an offensive weapon and appeared before Norwich Magistrates Court yesterday, Thursday 12 May.

He was remanded in custody pending an appearance at Ipswich Crown Court on Thursday 9 June.
