Benhall – teenage boy charged with attempted murder appears at court

A teenage boy charged with attempted murder following the assault of a teenage girl in Benhall has appeared at court.

Police were called by the East of England Ambulance Service just after 7am on Sunday 2 October, to reports that a teenage girl had been assaulted in an area of grassland close to the junction of Aldecar Lane and Benhall Green, Benhall.

The victim was treated for stab wounds and a back injury and taken to Ipswich Hospital where she remains in a serious but stable condition. Her injuries are described as life changing.

It is believed the incident took place at around 2am, with the victim left for several hours before being found by a dog walker who alerted the emergency services.

At 8.40am on 2 October, officers arrested a 17-year-old boy on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He was taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning. He was further arrested while in custody on suspicion of attempted murder.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was subsequently charged with attempted murder and possession of a knife.

He made an initial appearance before Ipswich Youth Court this morning, Tuesday 4 October, where he was committed to appear before Ipswich Crown Court this afternoon.

The suspect has been remanded in custody by the crown court, pending a next appearance on Thursday 3 November.

A teenage boy has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a knife following the serious assault of a teenage girl in Benhall on Sunday 2 October.

Police were called by the East of England Ambulance Service just after 7am on Sunday 2 October, to reports that a teenage girl had been assaulted in an area of grassland close to the junction of Aldecar Lane and Benhall Green, Benhall.

The victim was treated for stab wounds and a back injury and taken to Ipswich Hospital where she remains in a serious but stable condition. Her injuries are described as life changing.

It is believed the incident took place at around 2am, with the victim left for several hours before being found by a dog walker who alerted the emergency services.

At 8.40am on 2 October, officers arrested a 17-year-old boy on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He was taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning. He was further arrested while in custody on suspicion of attempted murder.

Detectives were granted a superintendent’s extension to detain him for questioning for an additional 12 hours.

The 17-year- old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has subsequently been charged with attempted murder and possession of a knife.

He has been remanded and is due to appear before Ipswich Magistrates’ Court today, Tuesday 4 October.

A teenage girl who was seriously injured after being assaulted in Benhall remains in hospital as detectives continue to question a boy who was arrested in connection with the attack.

Police were called by the East of England Ambulance Service just after 7am yesterday morning, Sunday 2 October, to reports that a teenage girl had been assaulted in an area of grassland close to the junction of Aldecar Lane and Benhall Green, Benhall.

The victim was treated for stab wounds and a back injury and taken to Ipswich Hospital where she remains in a stable condition. Her injuries are described as potentially life changing.

It is believed the incident took place at around 2am, with the victim left for several hours before being found by a dog walker who alerted the emergency services.

At 8.40am yesterday, 2 October, officers arrested a 17-year-old boy on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He was taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning. He was further arrested while in custody on suspicion of attempted murder.

Detectives have been granted a superintendent’s extension to detain him for questioning for an additional 12 hours.

A police cordon remains at the scene while investigations are carried out.

Inspector Gary King said: “We fully understand the shock this will have caused within the local community and that many people will be feeling very concerned.

“I would like to reassure people that officers have been working non-stop in both our first response and the subsequent investigation and we do not believe there is any wider threat to the public. The victim and the suspect are known to each other.

“Officers have been supporting the victim and her family, while we have been continuing our enquiries into what is a very serious incident.”

Officers continue to appeal for anyone who may have seen individuals in the area of the assault and the adjacent open areas during the early hours of Sunday morning, 2 October, to get in touch with police.

She was treated for stab wounds and a back injury and taken to Ipswich Hospital where she remains in a stable condition.

It is believed the incident took place around 2am, with the victim left for several hours before being found by a dog walker who alerted the emergency services.

Police subsequently arrested a 17-year-old boy on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He has been taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

There is currently a police cordon at the scene while investigations are carried out.

Both the victim and suspect are known to each other and at this time police are treating it as an isolated incident with no wider threat to the public.

Officers are appealing for anyone who may have seen individuals in the area of the assault and the adjacent open areas during the early hours of this morning, Sunday 2 October to get in touch with police.
