Man jailed for robbery at ATM in Lowestoft

A 40-year-old man from Lowestoft has been jailed following a robbery at a cash machine in the town.

Solomon Tomkinson, of Grosvenor Road in Lowestoft, was sentenced to four years and three months’ imprisonment at Ipswich Crown Court today, Friday 23 October, after being pleading guilty to the offence.

The robbery took place in the early hours of Wednesday 17 April where a 65-year-old man using the ATM at Asda in Horn Hill was pushed from behind and his cash stolen as it was dispensed from the machine.

The victim grabbed the suspect, who managed to escape with £440 of the withdrawn £450 in a blue MG car that had been stolen from the High Street the previous day. The remaining £10 was left at the scene and seized by police. The victim sustained minor injuries to his leg as a result of the incident.

The incident was captured on CCTV and Tomkinson was identified as the suspect, with the stolen MG car located a short distance from his home address. At the time of his arrest, a search of his home was conducted and items belonging to the owner of the MG car were seized, including a Worx drill and North Face gloves.

Tomkinson was sentenced to a further 10 months for the charge of handling stolen goods, to be served concurrently.

Investigating officer, Andrew Thawley from Lowestoft CID said: “This was an appalling and unprovoked attack on a man in order to steal cash. The victim displayed great courage in attempting to thwart Tomkinson’s escape, who held no thought to the upset and harm he may cause his victim.

“It is very satisfying to see him behind bars where he will be able to reflect on his actions, and hope this serves as a deterrent to other would-be thieves and criminals.”
