Thefts from vehicles in Ipswich

Taking notes

Police are urging motorists to review vehicle security following a number of thefts in the Ipswich area.

Between 1 and 9 September 2019, 29 vehicles had items stolen from them.  Of those, nine had had a window smashed to gain entry.  At least eight vehicles had been left insecure.  Cash or a wallet/ purse was stolen in 15 cases and this included loose change left in the car.  Other items included mobile phones, sunglasses and passports.  In order to reduce the risk of being a victim of theft from your vehicle, please take the following steps:

•           Never leave anything on view in the vehicle.  Remove all items if possible.  Thieves will target small change, shopping bags and clothing looking for something to steal.

•           Lock your vehicle and set the alarm every time you leave it.  Physically check that the doors are locked before you leave it.

•           Close all windows every time you leave the vehicle.

•           If you hear an alarm sounding or glass breaking, investigate the cause without putting yourself at risk, if you can.  Look out of a window or view from a safe distance and call police if you suspect criminal behaviour has occurred or is about to occur.

•           Park in a secure area subject to good surveillance.  If you can, park in a garage or behind locked gates.
