Custody Detention Officers are responsible for the care and welfare of detained persons whilst in custody. This includes the provision of food, drink and medication as directed, conducting basic health assessments, facilitating religious observance and making reasonable adjustments for the disabled. You must also be able to demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills, with previous experience of effectively handling conflict and have the ability to work in restricted areas and confined spaces.
In addition, the duties will also include undertaking general care and maintenance checks to ensure cells, interview and changing rooms are clean, tidy and undamaged. You will also be required to complete all administration functions in the custody suite and take fingerprints, photographs and DNA samples and drug testing on arrest samples from the detainee.
As part of the role, Custody Detention Officer are also required to undertake escort duties and constant observation of detainees when required. This includes the supervision and management of Virtual Court detainees and process.
It is essential that applicants meet the following criteria:
- Demonstrate good numeracy and literacy skills
- Demonstrate good face-to-face customer service skills
- Demonstrate the ability to maintain control of difficult situations and individuals
- Physical ability to effectively restrain detainees
- Experience of working to strict procedures and guidelines
- Experience of working effectively as part of a team
- Demonstrate the ability to be resilient and manage time critical priorities
- Good basic keyboard skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
- Full driving licence due to the need to drive police vehicles

Hours of work are 37 per week on a rotating shift pattern (full time), which will include night and weekend working for which the appropriate allowance will be paid. Hours of work for Zero Hours are ad-hoc as required.
Consideration will be given to whether the post can be delivered on either a part time or job share basis, in line with the organisational requirements of this role.
