Starting Salary Band C £19,719 – 22,221 per annum whilst undertaking call handler proficiency and rising to Band D: £22,902 - £25,914 per annum upon completion of controller training. Both salary Bands will include shift and weekend working allowances on completion of training. Potential start date is Monday 11th March 2019.
Applications are invited for the above full time posts in the 24/7 Contact and Control Room, at Police Headquarters, Martlesham. It’s not an easy job working in our Contact and Control Room, but it can be hugely rewarding. There are certain skills that you will need to have, and we will test you during the recruitment process.
For example, you will:
Speak with callers (including 999) who may be vulnerable, confused, distressed, frightened or even angry
Frequently make difficult decisions whilst under pressure prioritising conflicting demands and personally taking responsibility for delivering the right service
Give advice over the telephone to the public on lots of different issues
Learn to use our cutting edge digital radio communication system to direct police officers often in difficult and demanding situations
Be confident using cutting edge IT systems and already able to audio type (type written text whilst talking on the telephone) at 30 words per minute. This will be tested.

It is essential that applicants meet the following criteria:
- Proven experience of working in a customer service environment.
- Ability to demonstrate good verbal and written communication.
- Previous experience of dealing with members of the public.
- Ability to acquire and retain wide ranging knowledge and information.
- Previous experience of working within a team environment.
- Ability to demonstrate good interpersonal skills together with an ability to work under pressure.
- Previous experience of using Windows based computer systems together with good keyboard skills.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the Data Protection Act.
It is desirable that applicants meet the following criteria:
- Previous experience of working as a radio operator

Hours of work are 37 per week on a rotating shift 6 day pattern followed by 4 rest days. Shift patterns, which are regularly reviewed, will include night, weekend and bank holiday working for which the appropriate allowances will be paid (subject to review). Please note there is little opportunity to reduce any late and night shift working, this role necessitates the completion of the full shift rotation. This post is offered on a permanent basis, subject to probation.
