Based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire; Operation Hydrant is the national coordination hub for non-recent child sexual abuse cases involving people of public prominence and/or within an institution or organisation.

The Operation was established in August 2014 to provide operational coordination across policing in a complex and high profile area of operational activity. The business area remains subject to high levels of public interest and is frequently required to be accountable to external scrutiny at the highest level.

This requires a sophisticated communications response to establish a consistent and transparent public narrative. Operation Hydrant also acts as the interface between policing and the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse.

This critical role of Communications Officer provides both tactical and strategic communications support to the Strategic Communications Manager; additionally the role provides specialist expertise to the Operation Hydrant Management Team and forces nationally.

It is essential that applicants meet the following criteria:

  • Degree within a related discipline
  • Experience within Communications within a Policing or Public Sector environment
  • In-depth knowledge of Digital Communication platforms and emerging trends, technologies, and issues
  • Ability to proof read to an exacting and high quality standard
  • Expertise within a range of content management systems (Word, Excel, Social Media Platforms, Photoshop, Indesign, Google Analytics)
  • Self-starter with good organisational skills and ability to work to deadlines ensuring excellent attention to detail
  • Demonstrate an ability to assess the bigger picture and take the initiative, identifying and assessing current situational issues and longer term impact of decision making processes
  • Be available out of hours where required

It is desirable that applicants meet the following criteria:

  • An understanding of the factors influencing policing landscape nationally, and in particular the issues pertaining to non-recent child sexual abuse
  • A working knowledge of legislation and guidance pertaining to disclosing information into the public domain, which may include the Data Protection Act, Human Rights legislation, the law as it relates to anonymity for sexual offence victims and young persons, Freedom of Information legislation and guidance by the College of Policing regarding media and communications

Hours of work are 37 per week Monday to Friday. This post is offered on a temporary basis to 31 March 2020.

Consideration will be given to whether the post can be delivered on either a part time or job share basis, in line with the organisational requirements of this role.
