Multi Agency Public Protection Arrangements
Public Protection Officers are responsible for the daily
management of potentially dangerous persons, registered sex
offenders, and other sex offenders residing within the county.
The risks posed to the public by dangerous persons (both
convicted and un-convicted) can never be completely eliminated but
responsible authorities need to take all reasonable action to keep
risk to a minimum.
The management of these offenders is undertaken by the way of
Multi Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA). This is a
process through which the police, probation and prison services
work together with other agencies to manage the risks posed by
violent and sexual offenders living in the community in order to
protect the public.
MAPPA contributes to better identification and management of
these offenders. This partnership approach is crucial and is
extremely effective in reducing the risk posed by dangerous
offenders as well as contributing to improved protection for the
public.
Representatives from these services share information about
offenders and regularly meet to discuss how they should be managed.
They also draw the expertise and services of other authorities
included in MAPPA, such as Children and Young People Services,
Adult and Community Services, Housing, Health Trusts, Mental Health
and Victim Support.
MAPPA is all about protecting the public. All MAPPA meetings
will identify who could be at risk from an offender and how these
people can be protected.
