Sgt Phil Barrett

What does your job involve?

I'm part of the North East Ipswich SNT team. I engage with various members of our communities and work alongside partners to ensure that our varied long term problem solving runs as smoothly as a Shimano gearing system.

What is the best part of your job?

I enjoy the variety of issues we get involved with and the challenges they present to resolve them. I take great satisfaction in seeing the work through to a positive conclusion and the results good work can have. I also get to ride my bike to work and from work on a regular basis.

What is your biggest achievement to date?

Last May, Bobby on a Bike gave me the opportunity to cycle across Great Britain in aid of the Help for Hero’s charity. Four days on the bike, almost 400 miles and the highlight was meeting an injured serviceman who spoke with such dignity.

What is your favourite saying?

“If at first you don’t succeed, forget it and go for a bike ride.”

Describe your perfect weekend?

A weekend with the family, perhaps in Holland cycling down quiet country lanes, a picnic lunch, an evening show and then clogs of real ale to finish off the evening.

What would you spend your last tenner on?

Something for my bike - but don’t tell the wife.

What is your biggest luxury?

A 2010 Specialised Secteur Comp – Carbon front forks, rear seat stays and post, Shimano 105 chain set, A frame geometry with zertz inserts that gently massages your entire body from sportive to commute – (It’s a bicycle).

Which three words sum you up?

Just going outside.

What three items would you choose to take to a desert island?

A Bicycle, a puncture repair kit, a jar of Vaseline.

How do you take pride in keeping Suffolk safe?

In the words of Alberto Contedor - A clean and well-oiled chain built with quality parts is far more effective. A downhill ride is easy but cycle uphill and you will be rewarded with achievement.
