Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
To become a police officer you must be successful throughout all

from the moment you first send the application form to us until you
are given a start date. The Human Resources (HR) department will
keep you informed of the progress of your application.
You must have good unaided vision of not less than 6/36 in each

For more details please check the
Home Office Police Recruitment website.
Qualifications are not a requirement for appointment but we must
satisfy ourselves that your academic base is sound enough to cope
with the necessary law training. You will be required to produce
your examination certificates if recommended for appointment. If
you are still, or have recently left, full-time education, we may
also ask for a referee from the relevant institution.
As a rural force, driving is a requirement. You can apply
without a licence, but you would be expected to have passed the
driving test within 30 weeks of our appointment.
There is no upper age limit although the normal retirement age
for constables and sergeants is 55 years and there is a two-year
probationary period. We would have to consider the likely return on
our investment from more mature candidates.
Constables are appointed on a two-year probationary period,
although the classroom element of the training programme would be
completed sooner than that.
The first eight weeks are based at Police Headquarters,
Martlesham followed by thirteen weeks based at a Personal
Development Unit (PDU) either in Ipswich, Lowestoft or Bury St
Edmunds, dependant on your posting.
Applications will not be accepted from people who have
previously applied unsuccessfully to any police force in England
and Wales in the past six months.
