As part of Brake Road Safety
Week (23rd-29th November) drivers in Felixstowe with a Section 59
warning are being urged to attend a Learn and Live presentation at
Felixstowe Fire Station in High Road West on Sunday 22nd November
2009 at 2.30pm.
A Section 59 warning is issued to a driver or their vehicle
following anti-social and careless driving and those who attend the
Learn and Live presentation will have them removed. The initiative
will give drivers the opportunity to have a ‘clean slate’ in return
for attending the education event. This is driven by the fact that
if a second offence warning is issued, their vehicle can be
confiscated.
Other members of the public are also welcome to attend.
It is hoped the event will encourage drivers to stop anti-social
and careless driving through education about the dangers. The
presentation will include a film containing graphic images
highlighting the consequences of road collisions caused by
inappropriate driving. Fire officers will discuss their own
experiences and there will be a practical demonstration of cutting
a volunteer out of a vehicle.
The Learn and Live presentation will be presented by the Fire and
Rescue Service and supported by the Felixstowe and District Safer
Neighbourhood Team (SNT).
PCSO Steve Butcher from Felixstowe and District SNT says,
"Education is the key to this event as an alternative to
prosecution. We want drivers to consciously improve their careless
driving to reduce the chance of repeat offences. This will not only
keep them out of trouble but will mean a safer community for
everyone.
"We are hoping that the event will attract a good number of drivers
who have committed Section 59 warnings as their offence will be
removed from their record. If they were to commit a second offence
then potentially their vehicles can be seized and they will have to
pay £150 to get it back. This is quite an incentive to get their
initial warning removed!
"We are not only encouraging drivers who have committed offences
but their friends, family or the public to attend. This is an
informative and impactive presentation that will affect people who
watch
it."
