Hate Crime

Hate Crime causes great distress to its victims and the wider community.

This form of crime may be motivated by prejudice against an individual’s sexual orientation, sex, religion, race or disability.

Examples of hate crime may include: verbal abuse, property damage, violence, threats, offensive messages or other harassment.

Suffolk Constabulary takes this type of crime very seriously and is committed to tackling this to make our communities safer.

Its policy is to record, and investigate hate crime, and give high priority to the investigation of these incidents.

Full recognition is given to the fact that individual incidents, which may appear minor in nature to some, are far more serious when part of a pattern of behaviour directed at members of a minority group.

The Constabulary uses a problem solving approach, seeking long-term solutions and using all the benefits of inter-agency and partnership working.

People who witness or are the victim of hate crime are encouraged to report the incident to the police as soon as possible.

To report hate crime, please click on the following link to access the online reporting form:

You should dial 999 when life is threatened or people are injured, or if there is a crime in progress or an immediate police response is necessary.

Racist Incidents

Suffolk Constabulary has been working in partnership with Suffolk County Council (SCC) and the Refugee Council to provide a freephone helpline, whereby racist incidents may be reported in a person’s language of choice.

Depending on the wishes of the victim this information may be retained by the SCC Racial Harassment Initiative, which will be able to provide support, or may also be passed on to the Constabulary to investigate the incident.

The helpline number is 0800 138 1643.
